We recently introduced our new CGT What‑If Scenario Planner.
Continuing our focus on improving the platform, we’re excited to add a new capability: you can now run a ‘What If’ scenario to see how to generate a target cash amount through a range of strategies. This means you can calculate the disposals required to reach any chosen cash target.
To use this, simply:
-
Head to the clients overview page and select 'Capital gains'
-
Click the 3 buttons on the left and select 'Capital gains scenario tool'
-
Select 'Raise Target'
-
You can then enter the £ amount you wish to raise, choose whether you would like to calculate by value or gain and select disposal strategy
- Available strategies include highest or lowest units, highest or lowest total gains and highest or lowest percentage gains.
Example
If a position is worth £1,000 and includes £200 of capital gain, choosing Value means the full £1,000 counts toward your target when sold. Choosing Gain means only the £200 gain contributes toward the target.
You can choose from several disposal strategies, including prioritising the highest or lowest number of units, the highest or lowest total gains, or the highest or lowest percentage gains.
Once selected, the tool calculates how to meet your target, showing how many units would be sold from each asset, the total value raised, and the capital gain realised. You can manually adjust these figures if needed.
Strategy descriptions
- Most Units — sells the asset with the highest number of units first, then moves to the next until the target is reached.
- Least Units — sells the asset with the fewest units first, then continues in ascending order.
- Highest Total Gains — prioritises assets with the largest total capital gains.
- Lowest Total Gains — prioritises assets with the smallest total capital gains to help minimise realised gains.
- Highest % Gains — focuses on assets with the highest percentage increase.
- Lowest % Gains — focuses on assets with the lowest percentage increase.
